In My Mailbox (vlog #1, Jan. 1st 2012)

In My Mailbox is a weekly event created by Kristi at The Story Siren where we all get to share the fabulous things that we received, bought or borrowed. It's a fun way to see all the great things happening to others in the book blogging community.

I am very excited today because I get to share my first ever video IMM with you all!! I got a Kodak PlaySport 2x3 video camera and a tripod for Christmas (I love it!). Please bare with me -- I have a cold so I might sound kind of off.

In My Mailbox:

For Review:

Miss World
by Randi Black
It's 1993. Kim Ho wishes she were Courtney Love, instead of the chubby 16-year-old who clashes with her traditional Chinese parents. Her very own Kurt Cobain arrives in the form of Kevin, a 26-year-old failed musician. But Kevin uses Kim's rock-star dreams to exploit her, and those dreams die along with the real Kurt Cobain.Too scared to tell anyone, Kim conjures up a cross-dressing imaginary friend and dates Walter Riordan, the cute boy from special-ed. Walter helps her recover, but after a joke snowballs into a plot to murder Kevin, Kim's forced to choose between revenge or her sanity. This is a truly daring and original coming-of-age novel about one girl's quest to reclaim her power from those who've stolen it.
I am very excited to be reading this as part of the blog tour, which is being hosted by Paranormal Wastelands. While this book covers a genre of music that is not my main focus, as a musician who has traveled, competed, etc. the music 'element' of this book definitely intrigues me. I am also very curious because Randi Black seems to have a very unique writing style. I can't tell you what I think of the book yet -- but I can tell you that reading it looks like it will be interesting.

  9. I'm taking the risk to look like a complete idiot, but what the heck is Zellers? A US bookstore or something international or.. ? *so confused*

Your haul looks great.. so great, in fact, that I think you should send me at least four of these books.. ;)

    Happy Reading!

  16. LOL!!!!!!! OMG, you have the same exact camcorder I do!!! We are seriously like twins!! I still need to get a tripod, though...because I can't get it to stand on its own! But yeah, twins! I skipped last week, too. And as you said, LEGEND and SWEETLY. All right!!! I've already read an ARC of LEGEND but loved it enough to request a real copy. I bought DESTINED a couple of weeks ago to read. I think that GHOSTGIRL book isn't the first in the series. The black one, GHOSTGIRL, is the first. The hardcover copy is even more gorgeous-looking. Check it out sometime! Maybe you can get a cheap used one on Amazon? That's how I buy a lot of the older hardcovers. I have Lisa McMann's THE UNWANTEDS to read. I thought THE WAKE TRILOGY was just okay. I skim-read it pretty fast, but it's not really my genre. I still have an ARC of SHATTER ME to read. I really want to, but am nervous because I've heard mixed things from people I really trust. Haha, If I had the first two Carrie Ryan's in paperback, I'd probably borrow the third one and then buy it in paperback. I'm so OCD that I must make all my books match, be they hardcover, paperback, ebook, etc. Glad you liked LEGEND so much. Me too. I'm trying to recall if I reviewed it in Nov. If not, I so totally will have to this month... I think the reason the Clare book was in the back is that it was initially overstock. They probably had a ton of copies out and then they sold out and nobody recently checked the overstock to see what needed to be replenished. (Can you see the bookseller in me coming out? That happened with us recently. I forget what it was, but it was a teen book we had a ton of copies of...in the back.) Did you see that next year, Jackson Pearce's book is FATHOMLESS and THE LITTLE MERMAID? I'm so freaking excited!!! YAYYYYYYYY, CINDER!! Our copies came in on Wednesday!! It's not strict-on-sale, so the bookstore is allowed to sell it now. My store has it in a corrugated display, in the New in Teen Fantasy, and it will be on the Happy New Year Endcap for two months. Since Marissa had Macmillan send me an ARC, I read it early and passed it to the store manager. He really liked it and also featured the book on our What's Hot Stepladder. So excited for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Hello Kathy. Thanks for being part of my blog tour!

    Happy New Year!

  19. No worries about the super long post. :p Just means you had a lot to say. :) I didn't know you worked in a bookstore. That's pretty cool. :) If I lived in a city I would probably try to get a job doing that. As it is I live in a tiny town that doesn't even have a bookstore. *shakes head*

And OMG a retelling of The Little Mermaid? How exciting! That's my mom's favorite fairy tale. I'll have to get that when it releases and let her read it.

  29. @Giselle: Oh, no! *laughs* Don't tell me this will be (book-that-won't-be-mentioned) round two? I'll keep an open mind and definitely let you know what I think. But *eep*, you and I tend to like a lot of the same stuff.

As for Destined, extremely excited about reading it. Clockwork Angel is brilliant but taking me a while. And my Legend review should be up tomorrow, my cold permitting. (Should be fine.)
