Review: Die For Me by Amy Plum

First up, a major thank you to Jodie over at Books For Company for sending me this when I won a contest for her blogversary. It's taken me a while to get to it, but that certainly wasn't for a lack of wanting to.

Anyway, with that said ... how many of you knew coming into this review how much I wanted to read Die For Me? I bet a few people are nodding their heads with that. Die For Me really intrigued me. I love anything to do with zombies; especially when an author creates their own system of rules. The gorgeous cover made the book pretty hard to ignore. I love books that take place in parts of the world I've never been, so the Paris setting also had my attention. And I'd heard this is a great love story. So with that said, I doubt it was a surprise to anyone that I wanted to read this.

Did it measure up, though? My expectations, my hopes, my dreams for this book were absolutely earth shattering and sky high. Well, I'll tell you this. Die For Me wasn't perfect, but it was a book that I did enjoy despite its flaws. Read on and I'll do my best to explain.

The Plot: (Summary from GoodReads)
My life had always been blissfully, wonderfully normal. But it only took one moment to change everything.

Suddenly, my sister, Georgia, and I were orphans. We put our lives into storage and moved to Paris to live with my grandparents. And I knew my shattered heart, my shattered life, would never feel normal again. Then I met Vincent.

Mysterious, sexy, and unnervingly charming, Vincent Delacroix appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my feet. Just like that, I was in danger of losing my heart all over again. But I was ready to let it happen.

Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Because Vincent is no normal human. He has a terrifying destiny, one that puts his life at risk every day. He also has enemies . . . immortal, murderous enemies who are determined to destroy him and all of his kind.

While I'm fighting to piece together the remnants of my life, can I risk putting my heart--as well as my life and my family's--in jeopardy for a chance at love?

To me, Die For Me was three things. It was a pretty decent supernatural tale about beings called Revenants. It was a story about coming to terms with loss and realizing that even when people die, you must keep living. And it was, of course, a love story. One of these things it covered exceedingly, excruciatingly well. The other two ranged, at least for me, from being 'good' to being just 'passable'.

The lore for the Revenants and Numa is very interesting and I think that Any Plum did a fantastic job developing it and letting the reader discover it with Kate throughout the book. I was very interested in this part of the story and thought that it was all very well thought out and fairly original. I also thought that the concept of the Numa, to balance the Revenants, was interesting and relatively scary.

With that said, I had two issues with the action plot of the book. Issue one was that I saw everything coming. In one sense this isn't terrible and it made me grin from time to time. The feeling of "Oh, yes! That is exactly what I would have had happen!" can be a very fun experience as a writer who is reading. Yet at the same time, when that happens too often it takes some of the edge away from the book. This clearly isn't something that is within Amy Plum's control, but it happened a lot more here then it normally does so I am noting it.

My other huge issue with this aspect of the plot -- and this one really carries through all the various plot arcs, actually -- is that Kate is a very passive character. I understood that in the beginning with what happened to her and how she was trying to heal. But it happens in multiple ways in her romance with Vincent. And the way that the final conflict goes down at the end of the book was, to me at least, totally and utterly disappointing. Everything I hope *not* to see in a paranormal book marketed to teenage girls. There is so much that I could say about this aspect of Die For Me because it really bothered me, but for the sake of spoilers I'm just going to leave it at that. Bad, bad, bad. I hope that the 'gift' Kate gets at the end of the book in the jewelry box gets put to *very good use* in the next book, because her "actions" in this book were pretty much non-existent.

While I did not get as strong a world building vibe in regard to Paris from this as I did for it in Anna and the French Kiss (or for India in Tiger's Curse for that matter) I still think that the level of description and detail were solid and that they did enhance my enjoyment of what was going on, rather then bogging it down. Overall, Die For Me was a quick and light read and aside from one part of the novel, where Kate is trying to figure out something about Vincent (and does a few dumb things where I wanted to hurl the book...) I pretty much couldn't put it down despite any personal or ethical quarrels I might have now that I've finished it.

The Characters:

Kate was a likable character and narrator for the most part, but as I said above she had a tendency to be either very passive about things, or to decide things that could easily go under the "too stupid to live" label. (And I don't use that one lightly or liberally and anyone who reads my reviews regularly can vouch for that...) There is a lot about Kate and Vincent ... from their relationship, to his interest in her, to their 'connection' that is not made fully clear throughout the book, which made it hard for me to relate to or root for her at various points in the story. I either didn't understand her reasoning, felt that her reaction to a situation was unbelievable, or felt that she was wasting her time and energy.

That leads to my next problem. I did not feel that Vincent was a consistent character. There are a few saving graces here ... namely that the book is written in first person from one POV which makes a character with a situation like his hard to write that way, and the fact that he is suppose to be so much older and have been through the things that he has. Still, it does not take away the fact that as a romantic lead he rang hollow for me. I couldn't connect with him. I didn't want to be with him (which isn't a good sign) but even more critically important I wavered continually about whether I wanted Kate to be with him. That's a kiss of death.

The rest of the characters were alright, although I must say that I felt there were possibly a couple more Revenants then necessary, to the point where Jules, Ambrose, Gerrard, Vincent and Charles all started to blend together. (Yes, I mean that exactly as I wrote it...) Looking at the book as a whole I can *now* see why they were all there. But still ... while reading it felt like a bit of character overload.

I thought that Georgia and Kate's grandparents were alright, but aside from Mamie letting her have a sleep over at Vincent's and what seemed a hint that her grandfather knew something that I either misread or that was never elaborated on their involvement didn't seem overly deep. (Always a shame -- I like family involvement in YA.)

The Romance:

I did not understand what was compelling Kate and Vincent to be together. I can see on Kate's end that she thinks he's hot. But that by itself isn't enough. His behavior toward her is erratic enough in the beginning that I couldn't understand how there ended up being a middle or an end. As the relationship continues she goes through many ups and downs with what she discovers about him and how she feels about being close to people after her parents' deaths. (I will say that this part was well done.)

As for Vincent, it's never clear to the reader what he sees in Kate, who seems very bookish and quiet and tame. There is clearly some type of supernatural connection between the characters as the book progresses, but so far as book one of this series is concerned we never get to see what it is -- and thus, more importantly, what it's role on the romance is. Does Vincent like Kate, or is he drawn to something about or within her that is beyond her control? The fact that we never figure this out and the relationship seems legitimately solid at the end of the book both puzzled me and annoyed me. If I was in Kate's shoes I would be trying to figure this out in a big way. It would really bother me.

The unfortunate truth for me, based on this, is that I was not satisfied with the romance between these two because I was never fully certain -- never felt that I was shown -- that it was true and genuine and that it came from them rather then from some external or internal force beyond their control.

In General:

Wow. I just went back and read everything I've said and I came down on this book pretty hard. The thing is -- it's a good enough book. It's a page turner, it has some original ideas, it kept my interest. But when I come to a paranormal romance I expect two things: (1) a good love story and (2) a heroine *and* hero doing something kickass to protect or save their world. (Whether on a huge scale or a small one.) Die For Me dropped the ball on both accounts. The romance fell flat for me. As I said above, I never felt certain how these characters actually felt -- or perhaps more importantly I never felt certain that what they felt were actually their feelings.

And I think that saying passive heroine speaks for itself. And please, if you really want to know e-mail me or something. I want to talk about that part of it so bad because Kate may be the most passive heroine (as far as how she figures into *her* story's climax) that I have ever encountered in a book I've finished. That's how strongly I feel about that.

If you are at all interested in Die For Me, it is certainly worth a read. there is some good stuff here. But there are also some serious problems. Am I planning to read If I Die? Absolutely. I have to admit, in the name of all fairness, that both of my major issues could be addressed in a sequel and there's enough good here that I want to see if that will happen. I wish I had liked this more then I did, but the truth is the truth. Die for Me is "good" but I think it could have been much, much "better".

Wicked Winter Read-a-thon! (Feb. 3rd - 5th)

I'm very excited to be taking part in this event. This will be my second time taking part in a read-a-thon and I hope to get lots of reading in since Jay is going away to visit friends this weekend. :)

Make sure that you keep an eye on this post, as this is where I will be doing updates, posting about any of the challenges that I take part in, and possibly even letting you get an early glimpse of what I think of the books I'm reading.

With that said, I bet you're curious to see what I'm hoping to pop open this weekend. As always, I make no guarantee that I will get to all of these, and if something on my shelves grabs me I will go with it. But this should at least give me a starting point.

Clockwork Prince
by Cassandra Clare
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa's powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.
Thoughts Going In?: I loved Clockwork Angel, so I'm really excited to see what will happen next. I wanted to dive into this immediately upon finishing that and totally made myself wait for the right time. That could be this weekend. :) Will I remain completely obsessed with Jem or will Will finally win me over?

Delirium
by Lauren Oliver
Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.
Thoughts So Far?: This is actually what I'm currently reading and it will be the first book I finish for the read-a-thon. I was very nervous about reading this book, but at this point I am very glad that I decided to sit down and get it started. I think that this should be required reading for any fan of romance. Why? Because it will serve as a reminder of how precious and important that love is, and it will remind us that love is always worth holding on to and fighting for.

Die For Me
by Amy Plum
My life had always been blissfully, wonderfully normal. But it only took one moment to change everything.

Thoughts Going In?: I've been dying to read this for ages and it's about time I quit talking about it and actually did it. The premise sounds intriguing and the cover is gorgeous. I can't wait to find out what I actually think of the book, having waited so long.

The Iron Daughter
by Julie Kagawa
Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.

Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.
Thoughts Going In?: I absolutely loved The Iron King. The only thing that's been keeping me from reading this is how many books I have needed to read. Now that I am pretty much devoting a month to reading stuff I want from my TBR pile, the time to sit down and dive into the next book in the Iron Fey series seems right. :)

Lenobia's Vow
by P.C. and Kristin Cast
The second in the enthralling new mini-series of novellas from the #1 bestselling authors of the House of Night, Lenobia's Vow tells the gripping story behind the House of Night's enigmatic riding instructor – and one of Zoey’s closest allies against evil

The House of Night is an international publishing sensation; with almost 12 million books in print, and an incredible 120 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, the series has taken the world by storm. Now, the excitement continues as the Cast mother-daughter duo shares the back stories of a few of the House of Night's most important – and mysterious – characters. The second of the House of Night Novellas brings us Lenobia, the strong, beautiful horseback riding instructor, who guides Zoey through some of her darkest hours, and has a dark secret buried in her own past...

In a small southern town at the turn of the century, young Lenobia is developing into a beautiful young woman with ideas of her own. But when she is Marked as a fledgling vampyre, her world turns upside down, and she is drawn to the musical streets of New Orleans. There, she learns of the city’s dark underbelly, ruled by powerful black magic. As Lenobia experiences her first love – and loss – and discovers a passion for horses to sustain her, she must come face-to-face with Darkness itself. And she may not escape without scars.
Thoughts Going In?: Quick! What's my favorite paranormal series? If you guessed House of Night you are absolutely correct! This is the latest, a novella about the Horse Mistress, Lenobia. The House of Night books are what initially drew me to reading YA and are part of what inspired Moon Dance. They have a special place in my heart and the odds that I will read Lenobia's Vow this weekend, provided it's available for Kindle, are very high.

Tiger's Quest
by Colleen Houck
Back in Oregon, Kelsey tries to pick up the pieces of her life and push aside her feelings for Ren. But danger lurks around the corner, forcing her to return to India where she embarks on a second quest--this time with Ren's dark, bad-boy brother Kishan, who has also fallen prey to the Tiger's Curse. Fraught with danger, spellbinding dreams, and choices of the heart, Tiger's Quest brings the trio one step closer to breaking the spell that binds them. Winner of a Parent's Choice Award!

Thoughts Going In?: I absolutely loved Tiger's Curse and actually bought Tiger's Quest and Tiger's Voyage before I even had the first book done. Why have I waited to read them? Because I tend to read and review as I go, rather then having too much of an advanced schedule. My readers were asked their opinions about whether they like getting reviews for books in a series back-to-back and the answer to that was a large and unanimous "No!". But it's been a few weeks since I read Tiger's Curse so I should be safe with Tiger's Quest now.

So, that's my huge and extremely ambitious list. Truthfully? I'll be happy if I finish three of those. But we'll see how it goes. :) Look below to see all of my updates for the read-a-thon. Thanks for dropping by!

February 3rd Updates...

5:00 P.M. -- I am 307 / 441 pages through Delirium. I am 75 / 346 pages through Die For Me.

My entry for the Wintery Sentences challenge:
Kaya felt a SHIVER run down her spine as she stood, FROZEN with fear in the WINTER GARDEN, watching THE BLACK ICE prison Tristan had made with his COLD MAGIC slowly form around her. She and Kyrenne, the FROST Prince, would be like two KISSING SNOWFLAKES if he chose to free her with his COLD KISS AFTER THE SNOW Queen had all but demanded that her son forget Kaya ever existed...

Thoughts? I had a lot of fun with that!

7:30 P.M. -- I'm still at 307 / 441 for Delirium, and I'm now 128 / 346 for Die For Me. I also had chicken, bacon, mushroom pizza. :D

Current thoughts: Delirium is incredible but is also very draining because of how intense it is. Die For Me is more fun, when I'm not considering strangling Kate for occasionally doing something dumb. I think I made one slight miscalculation in the books I chose this weekend -- everything is (to varying degrees) really intense! I may need to intervene and get something more light or funny. We shall see. More thoughts as the weekend continues!

11:00 P.M. -- I am still at 307 / 441 pages for Delirium. I am now at 170 / 346 pages for Die For Me.

Current thoughts?: Glad I decided to stick with Die For Me. Kate still doesn't seem like the most well constructed heroine I've ever met, but Amy Plum did a fantastic job on building the mythology for her book and despite its flaws I am enjoying it.

Into The Unknown Challenge

Well this looks interesting. A challenge to talk about where we read, what we're reading and what our reading habits are. The host asked for pictures, but since I only have a video camera -- and have no clue how to get it to take pictures instead of video -- I did a video for you guys instead. Enjoy!

February 4th Updates...

1:00 P.M. -- So I finished Die For Me last night. I'm glad that I stayed with this, because it continued to get better and better as it went on, and it had the whole "Aw, that's so sweet!" feeling going for it that I like to feel when I close a book. I'll likely review this on Tuesday. As for Delirium, I'll likely be picking that up once I choose my dress and my date for the Wicked Winter Ball. :D

The Wicked Winter Ball

It's time to dress in the most gorgeous gown one can imagine, then step out onto the dance floor with the man of your dreams. :D I absolutely love the idea of this challenge and even though I just woke up half an hour ago, my brain was immediately scrambling over what I would wear and who I'd want to go with. I went and saw what everyone else chose, because I want my choices to be original. So, here we are...

My Dress:

There may be lots of ladies wearing this on the cover, but as of the time of this writing, I'm happy to see I'm the only one who has chosen to wear it to the ball. :D I chose this dress because I think it's gorgeous and reminds me of a dress I boutght at a music festival I attended during high school. That dress wasn't as fancy, but it was the exact same shade.

My Date:

Anyone who watched the video I made last night so had to see this coming. :D Of course, Kishan is going to need to switch to being a man because otherwise (1) dancing would be very weird, and (2) we might have some issues with security. :p Plus, I think a few people might panic if a tiger randomly entered a ballroom, and a few of our dates might try to protect us first and ask questions later. So, for anyone not familiar with the Tiger's Curse saga, here is a description:
He was very handsome, but in a darker, more swarthy way then Ren. His skin was antique-bronze, and his hair was ink black, swept away from his face and slightly curled. His eyes were gold with specks of copper.
—Kelsey's thoughts upon seeing Kishan for the first time. Tiger's Curse, page 194

Anyway, thanks so much to Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer for hosting such a fun and imaginative challenge. I had a great time with this!

11:00 P.M. -- And Delirium is finished! I'll tell you now, that book is incredible. It was incredibly hard for me to keep reading at times, but I also feel that it was incredibly worthwhile. I'm going to be very excited to get started on a review for it.

Anyway, time for a break from reading until tomorrow. (I don't want to start having my books blur.) I'm going to go play some Star Wars: The Old Republic. Talk to you later!

Ah, winter. What better time is there then this to snuggle up with a good book and a cup of cocoa while basking in the warmth of a roaring fire? When I was a kid winter was the time to hole up in the basement playing Super Mario Brothers or Final Fantasy II, but now that I'm so busy with my blog books have taken up a large amount of the time that I use to devote to gaming.

Part of this is that you can't "lose" at reading a book. Part of this is that I feel the only way I can write my own book to the best of my ability is to read, part of this is that books don't hurt my wrist like games do, and (mostly) part of this is that I love books.

I have a huge backlog of books that I need to get read, and even more that are on my to-be-bought list. Here are the top ten books that I want to read most this winter. Enjoy!

1. The Mephisto Covenant
by Trinity Faegen
I finally have this in my possession, all I need now is the time to actually read it. I've been itching to get my hands on this book since I first heard about it around the start of September and I finally got to pick it up on a recent trip to Chapters. Expect to see my review for this soon because odds are I won't be able to hold off from reading this for very long. It really sounds like my kind of book.

2. Destined
by Jessie Harrell
I am a huge fan of Greek mythology. I've said that a zillion times by this point. This book, which is a retelling of the myth of Eros and Psyche (Cupid and Psyche for those not familiar with the actual Greek name for him) and it sounds absolutely fabulous. This has been getting rave reviews everywhere and yet I couldn't buy it at Chapters. Guess what's got the top spot on my next Amazon order?

3. Lenobia's Vow
by P.C. & Kristen Cast
This doesn't release until the end of January, but I am already counting down the days. I am a huge fan of the House of Night series and the events that happened in Destined have me very eager to read Lenobia's story. I know that some people are kinda "meh" on these novellas, but I love the insight that they give on some of the characters and I love how they tie into the main books. Dragon's was excellent and I'm sure Lenobia's will be great, too.

4. Hush, Hush
by Becca Fitzpatrick
I've told you guys that I want to get ahold of this book and give my two cents on it. Well, it's now sitting on my bed and I got to spend a few minutes with it. And I think ... You'll have to wait until I've finished it and written my review. ;) Yes, I know some of you are probably sitting there with copies of Silence going "What?! You're just reading that now?" Yes, it's funny how life can turn out that way. But I really can't wait to dive into this fully. (Waiting for my parents to show up at Chapters does not count.)

5. Amy and Roger's Epic Detour
by Morgan Matson
I've been talking about this one a lot lately, and I finally got ahold of it at Chapters. That was no small feat -- it was one of those books that was hiding from me and that I needed to get someone to help me find. I enjoy finding books so this always frustrates me. Especially when I'm holding six other titles (could not set down the one copy they had of The Mephisto Covenant!) and they all keep wanting to drop. But I have it now and, as with all things, it's only a matter of time until I get to read it.

6. Eternal Starling
by Angela Corbett
This one just sounds too amazing to pass up. I had a really interesting discussion with Angela about soulmates when she was doing her blog tour and I left a comment during one of the stops. It's also a book that I won a bookmark for, so it seems like it would only be right that I need the book, too. If it tells you how bad I want this, I'll likely end up ordering it via Amazon.com since it isn't up on Amazon.ca because I am so anxious to own it. I'm a sucker for a GOOD love triangle and this one looks like it has purpose.

7. Die For Me
by Amy Plum
How long have I been going on about wanting to read this? And I finally have it ... and it's sitting here. Ack! I have books I need to get done this month that are on a due date and I really need to get moving on those so I can get to the backpile of books I'm dying to read that I haven't yet. This sounds like it is going to be totally to die for -- pun intended -- and I absolutely cannot wait. Plus, I'm sure you guys are "dying" for the giveaway I'm going to be doing since I ended up with two copies.

8. Fever
by Lauren DeStefano
Can we say "possibly my most anticipated book of 2012?". It's currently between this and Insurgent by Veronica Roth, but that's got a May release date so it doesn't apply here. Wither was amazing and I actually didn't realize how incredible I thought it was until months later ... when I was still thinking about Linden ... and I had to admit that the book needed to go up a star. Yeah. As a reviewer, Wither kicked my butt. And I am sure that Fever will be equally amazing. I must know what happens!

9. Blue Sky Days
by Marie Landry
This has a lot going for it as I prepare to dive in. The premise sounds fantastic. I love contemporary romance and the idea of a girl needing to learn to have fun with life should be interesting. It also has the whole cancer aspect, which I admit may be a bit tough for me, but which will also provide a real challenge for these characters to face and grow from -- hopefully together. It doesn't hurt that Marie is a friend and that I wish her all the best. But don't expect anything less then the truth from me when it comes time to review. :)

10. Earth Angel
by E. Van Lowe
Lets wrap this up with a book I'll be reading and reviewing this week. I totally loved Boyfriend from Hell, and I have the good fortune of being in possession of a copy of the sequel. Earth Angel has been way up there on my list of books to read ever since I finished the first book, but other things have needed to get done too. I'm a bit busy with things right now, but you can rest assured I'll have a review out for this when it launches on Dec. 6th. If it's as awesome as Boyfriend from Hell I might even throw a little giveaway. :)

Well that's my list for this week. Did you see anything there that you want to read? Do we have any books in common? Are there any books that instantly made you cringe and want to go "Run, don't walk, in the opposite direction!"? Whatever your opinion, I would love to hear it. And feel free to link me to your list so I can drop by and visit. Have a great day!
